On behalf of Spencer Educational Foundation’s Board of Directors and the Foundation’s many beneficiaries, I also would like to thank you and the RIMS Carolinas Chapter for its $10,000 donation earlier this year. We appreciate the chapter’s continued investment in education and your contribution will support the Foundation’s programs and initiatives, including scholarships, internship grants and Risk Manager in Residence programs.
Speaking of those programs, as you may be aware, we are currently accepting application for our internship grants; the deadline for that program is January 9th. Applications can be found online at www.spencered.org. I would ask that you please share this information with your chapter members.

Join us Thursday, November 13th to hear Drew Bret of Gerretson Resolution Group speak to us on the very current topic: “Liability Medicare Set-Asides: Best Practices for Managing Risk Today”.
Andrew “Drew” Brett is a Senior Client Relationship Manager with Garretson Resolution Group. Drew works with clients nationwide with respect to Medicare Secondary Payer compliance. His work allows clients to verify and resolve in full any conditional payments made by Medicare on behalf of a claimant, as well as determining when/how to address Medicare’s future interest by identifying where Medicare Set-Asides (MSAs) should be considered as a part of workers’ compensation, liability and no-fault settlements.
Drew graduated from Liberty University with a B.S. in Government, with a specialization in Pre-Law and received his diploma in Paralegal Technologies from South Piedmont Community College.

October Luncheon: The Use of Social Media in Investigating Workers' Compensation claims
Please join us on October 16 at 11:30am for a luncheon and a presentation by Nicole Tackett, Esq. of Vernis & Bowling of Charlotte, LLC.
Nicole is an Ohio native, but has called North Carolina home since she was twelve years old. After graduating from UNC-Charlotte in 1992, Nicole taught world literature and served as community service coordinator in the International Baccalaureate program, which, at that time, was a newly integrated magnet program in the Charlotte Mecklenburg school district. Following the birth of her first son, Nicole attended law school at UNC-Chapel Hill, graduating in 2000. She has exclusively practiced workers’ compensation defense since that time. Prior to joining Vernis & Bowling in 2013, Nicole was a partner in the Charlotte office of Cranfill, Sumner & Hartzog, LLP.
Nicole manages and defends cases through all stages of the workers’ compensation process, from the initial determination of compensability through settlement. Additionally, Nicole litigates cases at the hearing level and at various stages of appeal, including appeals to the North Carolina Court of Appeals. Nicole has mediated well over 300 cases and has taken dozens more to hearing.
*UNC Charlotte will also do a brief presentation regarding the addition of a RMI concentration in the Risk & Insurance Master’s program.
