Medicare Set-Aside Update: Carolinas RIMS Luncheon on November 13

John Cattie Jr.  will be presenting “The Workers’ Compensation (WC) Industry may have a Medicare Set-Aside (MSA) Blind Spot.”  A deeper analysis of Medicare’s MSA review thresholds reveals an alarming fact: Medicare’s interests must be considered in all WC cases and ensure that Medicare pays secondary to WC in such cases. While Medicare is willing to review MSA proposals in certain settlements, that process provides no protection for RIMS members resolving claims under threshold. Join John V. Cattie, Jr., attorney and founding member of Cattie, P.L.L.C., as he discusses the MSA Blind Spot and MSA Alternatives in 2018. Mr. Cattie will also comment on a potential liability MSA review process which may reveal itself in 2019.

Join us at 11:30am for lunch on Tuesday, November 13 at Atrium Healthcare Center, located at 5039 Airport Center Parkway Building K, Room 10 Charlotte, NC 28208).

Property insurance policies are very complex documents.  When putting together programs and policies to cover an organization’s physical assets and resulting time element losses, there are common “potholes” in these contracts that risk managers need to be aware of.  Many of these can be eliminated with thorough negotiation, communication and documentation of the coverage terms and conditions.  This program will help risk managers identify, avoid and fix the common potholes and minimize surprises in the event of a loss.

Plan to join your fellow Risk Management peers at the October luncheon meeting. Whether you were directly impacted or not with the recent storms, a more detailed review of your Property program may be warranted.

The Rise of Commercial Drones – Risks, Regulations and Insurance

By 2020 it’s conservatively estimated that at least 2.7 million drones will be operating in U.S. airspace for commercial purposes.  The potential commercial uses for drones cuts across almost all industry sectors – from agriculture, engineering and construction to media, security and manufacturing.  With the new drone frontier comes evolving regulations and new insurance risks.  This talk will provide an overview of the regulatory environment, how the insurance marketplace is responding and ways for businesses to minimize the potential impact of drone risks.

Shadow Day

The Carolinas RIMS Chapter is pleased to once again host Shadow Day on March 31, 2017 for rising Risk Management professionals from our partner universities (Appalachian University and UNC Charlotte). This is an opportunity for the Carolinas RIMS Deputy and Associate members to spend time mentoring students who have expressed an interest in the Risk Management arena including Broker, Claims, Risk Manager and Underwriting roles. This is a great way to attract talent in the Risk Management industry which is seeing its established workforce approaching retirement.

The students will designate their first and second choice fields and the goal will be to match up the student with a Deputy or Associate member whose company can showcase “a day in the life of” their selected profession. The day will end with a dinner for all participants where the students will give a brief overview of their experience.

Sign-ups for sponsors will take place in February. On behalf of the Carolinas RIMS Board, we thank you for your consideration of this educational event which the students rely on for practical experience as they evaluate their future career choices.

Breakfast at Bryon's South End

Join us for Breakfast on September 17 at Bryon's South End. Check in will be at 8:00AM, with the meeting starting at 8:30am. Bryon's South End is located at 101 West Worthington Avenue, Suite 180, Charlotte, NC 28202.

We will be joined by Erica Dougherty from Beecher Carlson. Erica will be presenting "What Gets Measured Gets Managed". The concept of big data is past its debut in the worker’s compensation loss arena.  It is quickly evolving into an expected method for managing results within the C-Suite of many organizations.  While the prospect of the new tools can be exciting they do propose challenges for many risk management departments due to the amount of data available and the sophomoric utilization period.   The difficulty lies in pinpointing the methods that are effective and best suited to meet their specific organization goals.   The session will address approaches, concepts and methodologies on how actionable data will help reduce workers compensation loss cost within your company.
