Make sure you mark your calendars now for the 2012 RIMS Southeast Educational Conference that will be held October 3 - October 5 in Asheville, NC.  The conference will be held at the beautiful and historic Grove Park Inn.  Registration will begin in June.

Run For Peace is a 5K race that has been a significant fundraiser for United Family Services for many years.  Several Community Matters companies have asked about this terrific race and fun run at McAlpine Creek Greenway on May 26, 2012.   

We ask that each company select a captain for its team, who would be responsible for collecting the funds, mailing the funds in, and having everyone sign the form which also acts a waiver.  In addition to your company name, please also indicate Community Matters in the upper right corner of the form.   

Note: Although teams are encouraged to sign up at least 10 members, please go ahead and send in your form if you do not have that number.  Your team will be combined with other Community Matters companies to meet the 10-person requirement.

Matthew joined Reed Smith in January 2008 and is a member of the firm's Insurance Recovery Group. His practice focuses on exclusively representing policyholders in insurance disputes. Matthew specializes in advising large financial institutions on issues regarding mortgage insurance. He also has experience handling claims under first-party property policies and other liability insurance products.

Whitney joined Reed Smith in January 2008 and is a member of the firm's Insurance Recovery Group.  Whitney represents policyholders in disputes with their insurance companies and specializes in the representation of large financial institutions regarding mortgage-crisis related insurance issues.  She also has experience handling claims under property and general liability insurance policies and with bad faith litigation.

The Carolinas RIMS Chapter is the winner of the 2011 RIMS Student Membership Growth Award!  We received this award because of our increase of more than 9% in student membership in 2011.  This achievement will be acknowledged at the 2012 RIMS Annual Conference in Philadelphia, PA (April 15-18) via a listing in the conference program, along with a listing on a presentation slide during the Awards Luncheon on Monday, April 16.

There are two options for the seminar.  The first will be the all-day seminar that will include lunch at a cost of $40.  The second option is just to attend the lunch and a brief presentation after lunch for $25.

Mel Garofal serves as the managing partner for the firm and practices in the Charlotte office.  Since beginning practice in 1978, he has tried in excess of one hundred jury trials to verdict in both state and federal court, and has also handled over forty appeals before the North Carolina Supreme Court, The North Carolina Court of Appeals and the United States Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Jeff Kadis is a partner in the firm's Charlotte office. He specializes in workers' compensation, with emphasis in the areas of occupational disease and chemical exposure claims.  He has extensive experience representing business clients at hearings and at the appellate level before the North Carolina Industrial Commission, the North Carolina Court of Appeals, and Supreme Court.
